Description of the job

A vacancy for a “System Engineer for Validation of Galileo Open Service Navigation Message Authentication” has arisen within Airbus Defence and Space in Ottobrunn.

The successful applicant will join “Navigation Products/GNSS Performance”.

Tasks & accountabilities

Since almost 20 years, Airbus is supporting the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European GNSS Agency (GSA) in the development and deployment of Europe's Global Navigation Satellite System Galileo and the implementation and validation of Galileo Services for a global user community.

The Galileo system is operational and is providing Initial Services since December 2016. Open Service Navigation Message Authentication is a new Galileo service feature foreseen to be implemented in in future in order to make Galileo navigation signals more robust and protect the Galileo Open Service users
from potential threats like spoofing or replay attacks.

The successful applicant will actively contribute to the definition and implementation of the Galileo services, evolving from the present Galileo Initial Services phase up to the Galileo Full Operational Capability and beyond.

Tasks & accountabilities:

o Definition and Validation of Service Requirements for the Galileo Open Service, with focus on Open Service Navigation Message Authentication (OS NMA)
o Development and implementation of software tools for test and validation of the Galileo OS NMA scheme (based on the TESLA protocol) by post-processing of GNSS receiver data
o Participation to test campaigns to assess the performance of the Galileo OS NMA test signal in different user environment
o Contribution to the further consolidation of the Galileo OS NMA algorithm and service concept based on validation results
o Support to the definition of Minimum Performance Levels for OS NMA to be specified in the public Service Definition Document for the Galileo Open Service
o Support to the preparation of the OS NMA service validation plan, development and specification of Test Cases and Test Procedures, preparation of test reports, assessment and presentation of test results
o Follow-up of the validation activities of other stakeholders (collection of verification credits from system qualification activities, operational validation and external participants to the validation campaign)
o Definition of key performance indicators (KPI) to characterize the OS NMA service performance and implementation of software tools for KPI monitoring
o Galileo service performance analysis and prediction by means of software tools for Service Volume Simulation
o Participation to project reviews
o Support the Galileo Service Requirements Engineering and Validation team for any topic related to Galileo services, Galileo mission and system evolution(including the Galileo Second Generation) and contributing to any other tasks of the Galileo System Support team, as necessary
o Liason with the customer (GSA, ESA) in relation to the tasks above

This job requires an awareness of any potential compliance risks and a commitment to act with integrity, as the foundation for the Company’s success, reputation and sustainable growth.

Required skills

We are looking for candidates with the following qualification, skills and experience:

o You have a Master's degree in Navigation, Electrical Engineering, Geodesy, Computer Science, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Aerospace Engineering or similar
o You have acquired detailed theoretical and practical knowledge of system design, navigation signals and system performance of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GPS, Galileo, Glonass) or Satellite Based Augmentation Systems (EGNOS)
o You have a basic understanding GNSS receiver processing techniques and detailed understanding of modern cryptographic approaches for secure communication and data authentication
o You have demonstrated experience in software development with C/C++, Python or Matlab
o You are familiar with basic systems engineering processes and have experience with requirements engineering and verification according to ECSS standards
o You are able to analyze complex technical problems and define innovative solutions
o You are fluent in English
