Description of the job

A vacancy for a Pre-Sales Engineer has arisen within Airbus Defence & Space in Farnborough.

The successful applicant will join UAS Solutions Architecture team.

The High Altitude Pseudo Satellite (HAPS) “Zephyr” is a new, award winning and state-of-the-art solar powered ultralight weight CFRP Unmanned Air Vehicle(UAV) for use in both commercial and military applications from Airbus Defence and Space.

As a Pre-Sales Engineer your main scope will be to support the Solutions Architect responsible for all aspects of the delivery of very light-weight payloads for the Zephyr series of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) including specification, design, build/manufacture, and integration into the Zephyr HAPS platform.

The successful candidate will be subject to UK National Security Clearance in order to undertake related work in accordance with business needs.

Tasks & accountabilities

Your main tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Translating customer user requirements into technical solutions
  • Provide advice and guidance to payload suppliers on optimal integration solution for a Zephyr HAPS platform
  • Working with customers and suppliers provide technical summaries on Zephyr platform and payload capabilities
  • Provide input into the payload development strategy and roadmaps
  • To ensure the stakeholders clearly understand the requirements for the and the capabilities of the payloads
  • To liaise with the other subsystems teams such as power and propulsion to ensure that the best overall solution for the Zephyr system is being implemented
  • To manage the integration of payloads onto Zephyr to ensure mission success

Ensures the Zephyr HAPS Product Assurance (PA), design and verification standards are met

Required skills

We are looking for candidates with the following skills and experience:

Some of following experience / skills are anticipated

  • Familiarity with engineering methodologies for harsh environments
  • Technical ability / familiarity with some of the following payload types

o RF communications
o Optical and IF surveillance
o ESM and Sigint
o Data communications

  • Development of working procedure compatible with regulatory approval
  • Production of documentation including Test Plans, Test Schedules
  • Liaising with the software developers and hardware engineers
  • Strong communication skills to engage with management & technical colleagues
  • Ability to work to demanding time-scales

A familiarity with the configuration control tools and code configuration strategies

  • Subcontractor management
  • Sales and marketing support Customer facing skills
  • Production of documentation including Test Plans, Test Schedules
