Description of the job
The multibeam technology for telecommunications satellites is a response to the continuous intensification of the demand for a wide spectrum of services: television and satellite are two major examples. These satellites concentrate electromagnetic energy on a several relatively small regions of the Earth. The telecommunication link budgets are then improved and frequency reuse becomes possible in sufficiently separated areas. These two effects combined lead to high-capacity telecommunications systems. On the other hand, this plurality of satellite beams on the ground inevitably results in a complexification of the telecommunications payload, with numerous interconnected on-board equipment and resulting resources that must be exploited efficiently.
The telecommunications systems department of Airbus Defence & Space's mission is to intervene in the design phase of such systems. In direct interaction with the expert engineers of the different subsystems, its mission is to define payload architectures compliant with the constraints of the sets of equipment selected, but above all adapted to the specific telecommunications mission under consideration. The degrees of freedom, constraints, and objectives are known: the framework is therefore naturally adapted to a mathematical resolution of these design problems.
The objective of the internship is firstly to model the system to be optimized, then in a second step to implement one or more optimization methods with the possibility of hybridization. Advanced mathematical programming techniques may be studied.
This 6 Month internship will start in the first quarter 2018 (Date subject to some flexibility).

Tasks & accountabilities
The internship includes the following steps:
- analysis of the problem, system modelling, definition of the parameters to be optimized,
- mathematical modelling of problems in the form of an optimization problem,
- selection of adapted solving methods,
- implementation of these methods in calculation codes,
- evaluation on typical scenarios,
- development of an interface between the selected software and the tools developed internally in the telecommunication systems department.

- Programming: C/C++, Linux/Unix, Java
- If possible: Space telecommunications knowledge, SatCom payloads
