There is no magic formula for applying for a job at Airbus and many of the steps required will not differentiate significantly from what would be expected at other similar sized companies. However, we hope the information below will provide useful guidance on how to create a good CV and cover letter and will encourage you to apply with confidence for open positions within Airbus.

How to apply at Airbus

Follow the three easy steps described below and come join us. We are looking forward to your application !

1. Find the right job for you

Go to our Job Market to find open positions, or join our candidate pools if you don’t find any suitable positions at the moment.

2. Create your candidate cockpit and fill out your application

Whether you’re applying for a vacancy in the Job Market or joining our candidate pools, you will need to create a Candidate Profile in the Job Market. It lets you apply for jobs across Airbus and its three Divisions: Airbus, Airbus Defence and Space and Airbus Helicopters.

Eligibility for jobs in the UK

The application process is open to applicants from the UK and overseas, providing you meet the eligibility criteria. This includes written and oral fluency in English.
In your application you will be asked to inform us of your work status. Information is available on the home office website:

3. Pass the selection process

Each job opening has a specific selection process, but the process always follows the same basic journey.

Optimising your CV

A CV is the most flexible and convenient way to apply

  • It conveys your personal details in a way that presents you in the best possible light.
  • A CV is a marketing document in which you are marketing something: yourself! As such you should use active verbs and positive language.
  • You need to “sell” your skills, abilities, qualifications and experience to employers.
  • Your CV must also make you stand out in a pool of candidates that have similar profiles to you.
  • There is no perfect CV. You should use the appropriate format depending on your situation.
  • There are different expectations in different countries regarding structure and content; when in doubt stick to local market expectations.

Format & Content

  • Length – 1 or 2 pages depending on level of work experience
  • Include – key words and effective titles
  • Colours – keep it simple
  • Font – should be easy to read (Arial, Times Roman…)
  • Bullet points – short summaries (bullet points) are easier to read than full sentences
  • Photo and Personal data (e.g. date of birth, marital status) – depending on local market expectations (e.g. YES in Germany, NO in UK)
  • Language and Computer skills – yes, and please include level of ability for each
  • References – upon request (collect references, incl. name, job title, company, phone number and email address, and have this information ready to give to interviewers)
  • Logo of company - depending on local market expectations (e.g. YES in France and Spain)
  • Grammatically correct and error-free

International differences

  • Degrees, certifications, diplomas highlighted in applications
  • The picture is very important
  • CVs tended to be dated and signed
  • Personal data (date of birth, marital status) is appreciated
  • Attach no more than five documents
United Kingdom
  • Generally no longer than 2 pages
  • CVs tend to focus more on experience than education
  • The first paragraph focuses on candidate personality and motivations
  • Sometimes one paragraph is dedicated to skills
  • Do not include any personal data (e.g. date of birth, marital status)
  • CVs tend to be 1 page only, but this means they sometimes lack important information
  • Cover letters are included in the same document as CV
  • Company logos of previous employers make a good impression
  • Include your current position as a title at the top
  • Greater focus on educational background
  • Experience written in chronological order, from present to past or vice versa
  • No more than 2 pages long
  • Company logos of previous employers make a good impression



The way you structure your CV will depend on the aims of your application, and you may wish to consider one of the following options:

  • If you want to draw attention to your strengths, consider the Performance CV
  • If you want to focus on a specific job, consider the Functional CV
  • If you want to focus on your career aims (to change your career or get a promotion), consider a Targeted CV
  • You may also consider creating a CV that combines elements from more than one of these type


The Performance CV

A performance CV is the most popular type of CV. It highlights job titles and company names, starting with your most recent job and working backwards. However, you begin with an “Achievements” section, which highlights impressive achievements that can make you stand out from other candidates. Under each job title, you list your responsibilities in the role.

It’s particularly suitable for those wishing to highlight their career progression and stay in the same line of work.

  • It’s less suitable for those with particularly diverse CVs or gaps in their work history, those trying to change careers and those wishing to emphasize relevant experience that was some time ago.


The Functional CV

A functional CV can be useful if you’re looking for a career change. This is because they focus on your transferable skills and experience, rather than job titles, companies, and how long ago you got the experience.

In a functional CV, you promote your skills and achievements under three to six “functional headings”. For example, if you’re applying for work in a retail role then headings could include “customer service” and “sales” – both key skills for any retail role.

Under each functional heading you include more details about your relevant skills and experience. You may have gotten this experience from paid work, voluntary work or education.

It is a useful format if you wish to change to a broad, new area of work and show your relevant, transferable skills and experience, or if you want to highlight skills you’ve gained in previous jobs but don’t use in your current role.

The drawbacks with this type of CV are that it is one of the more unusual formats, and employers may feel you’re attempting to hide something.


The Targeted CV

The targeted CV is also useful if you’re looking for a career change because it focuses on your transferable skills and experience and is used to aim for a specific type of job. You only include details that are relevant to the job you’re applying for.

In this case you use the headings “Abilities” and “Achievements”, rather than creating three to six individual skills headings, and this can help your major strengths and achievements stand out. Please note that “Abilities” refer to natural or acquired skills or talents and “Achievements” refer to something you’ve accomplished and are unique to you (they should not be confused with “Responsibilities”, which are things that anyone undertaking the role would do). If achievements are measurable (e.g., they saved you or the company money or time) then try to include details of this as well.

As with the functonal CV, the targeted CV format is very useful for those wishing to change career or who have gaps in their employment history but it is also very useful for anyone wishing to target their CV towards one very specific role. Again, it is one of the more unsual formats, with all the associated disadvantages, and it may also mean that any well-known employers you’ve worked for or successful promotions you’ve achieved will be less noticeable as they’ll be on the second page.

Optimising your Cover Letter

  • Your cover letter should always be tailored to each individual job application.
  • Keep it to one page.
  • Where possible, begin the letter by addressing a person rather than “Dear Sir/Madam”.
  • Clearly indicate the position you are applying for.
  • Make sure you match your skills, attributes and experience to the job description.
  • Ensure you demonstrate your knowledge of the potential employer and the department in which you’ll be working.
  • Your letter should include a brief summary of what you are currently doing and how this will have prepared you for the vacancy in question.
  • Show enthusiasm for the position and provide the prospective employer with an opportunity to meet with you to discuss the vacancy.
  • Use the right key words and avoid using acronyms that others wouldn’t understand.

Interviews are like conversations

Interviews are part of the assessment stage of the application process. They can be done over the phone or in person.

At Airbus, interviews are a two-way process. They are an opportunity for us to learn more about you and for you to discover more about working at

Interviews can cover a wide range of subjects, including your CV, your employment or school history, past achievements and career choices and language skills.

We may also ask you to imagine how you would behave in certain work-based situations. And of course, interviews may cover specific technical competencies required for the job in question.

Before you apply

Do I need to speak a foreign language?

The business language at Airbus is English. Each job listing in the Job Market includes the specific language requirements for the position. Being able to speak French, Spanish or German is also an asset.

Can I apply for a job for a particular location?

In the Job Market you can filter job opportunities by location. You can also submit your location preferences with your application.

Can I apply for an internship?

Can I apply for an apprenticeship ?

What is the difference between the Candidate Cockpit and Candidate Profile?

In the Job Market, your Candidate Profile is part of the Candidate Cockpit.

The Candidate Cockpit is where you go to manage your Candidate Profile and your job applications. You can also search for jobs, change your user name and password or delete your Candidate Profile if you no longer want to be registered in our database.

The Candidate Profile is where you upload files like your CV and cover letter and enter personal information, qualifications, work experience and preferences.

You can update, release and lock your Candidate Profile at any time from the Candidate Cockpit. A 'released' Candidate Profile appears in the candidate pool and can be viewed by Airbus recruiters; a 'locked' Candidate Profile is not visible to Airbus recruiters (for example, when you’re updating it).

Can I save a partially completed application?

When you register in the Job Market, you will receive a user name and password.

Once you’re logged in, you can create and work on an application, save it for later, and submit it when it’s completed. You can also modify and change your Candidate Cockpit details.

IMPORTANT: If you don’t receive your user name and password right after registering, check your email account's Spam or Junk folder to ensure the message was not filtered.

Can I apply for more than one position at the same time?

Yes, but it doesn’t necessarily increase your chances of being selected. We strongly advise that you only apply for positions that truly fit your skills and experience, and that you provide as much information about yourself as possible in your online application.

What is Airbus’ policy concerning diversity?

After you apply

I have applied for an open position. What happens next?

The average response time for our recruitment process is 35 working days. We will let you know if you’ve been selected for the assessment stage or not. Please keep in mind that, to start with, three candidates are selected to pass an interview in the assessment stage. If these three candidates are not successful, other candidates will be considered for the position.

How do I know you have received my application?

We will send you confirmation emails when you register in the Job Market and when you apply for a vacancy.

If you don’t receive these emails, check your email account's Spam or Junk folder to ensure the message was not filtered.

When will I hear from you?

If your Candidate Profile is 'released' to the candidate pool, we will contact you whenever there is an opening that fits your qualifications.

If you apply for a job, we will be in touch with you by email or by phone throughout the process.

If you want to be kept informed about vacancies in specific areas, you can create a Job Agent, which will send you an alert with a list of all new open positions that match your criteria.

You can also use the 'Favourites' feature to bookmark selected positions.

Does Airbus provide a feedback to the applicant about the application even if the answer is negative?

We always provide you with an answer, positive or negative. In any case, you will hear from us. However, please note that, due to the high volume of applicants, we regret to be unable to provide individual feedback on rejections.

Technical issues

I cannot upload any attachments to my application. What should I do?

First, as our online application system is synchronised with Internet Explorer, please make sure to always use Internet Explorer 8 or above, rather than browsers such as Chrome or Mozilla. If it still doesn't work, check the size of the file. The maximum file size is 1MB. For each application, you can attach five different files. If this doesn't work either, please send us an email describing the problem at
